Genre- Research
In order to stay true to the photography genre of magazines, I wanted to do some research on the basic makeup of photography magazines. I found in the article " 30 magazines worth subscribing to," that most photography magazines tend to all include a technology section talking about the new technology and techniques to improve the reader's photography skills. On the other hand in stacks magazines article the magazines were more on the artistic side. Instead of focusing on tips for improving photography, they are displaying photographers works and the meaning behind them with articles and brief comments. Most of them tend to be controversial, reflective or informative. Everything in these magazines is supposed to drive out certain emotions or curiosity. Based on our brainstorming in a way, we are merging the two types of photography magazines to create a unique hybrid magazine which will increase our target audiences (which will be discussed in the next blog post) since we will be attracting serious photographers looking to improve their photography and those who simply love viewing and reading about the latest photographs.
(pictured below I've included various examples of the different types of photography magazines that I found interesting)
"The not-for-profit foundation Aperture was established in 1952 by a group of photographers and writers as ‘a common ground for the advancement of photography’ and has since established itself as one of the most authoritative voices in the field. Each issue combines thoughtful writing with top photography to provide a detailed account of a broad theme."
"Starting out as an online quarterly in 2013, Accent magazine is ‘A global celebration of the life lived outside the ordinary’ that went into print earlier this year. Although Accent doesn’t call itself a photography magazine (“the written stories are as important as the photography”), the high-quality documentary photography plays a major part in the stories they publish."
"A contemporary photography magazine published by the Amsterdam-based organization and museum of the same name, Foam features work by photographers selected from around the world and presented under a single theme."
"Popular Photography & Imaging is packed with great photos, how-to tips, lab tests of the latest equipment, and expert advice on getting the most out of every shot."
"This magazine is for men and women interested in creative photography. It profiles the personalities behind the lens and their contributions to art, history, fashion, journalism, and advertising. American Photo often features reviews of exhibitions and books, readers' photos and requests and picture portfolios and stories on working professionals."
